Award in Intravenous Sedation Dental Nursing

This course will provide the practical and theoretical knowledge and skills needed in order to competently assist during routine conscious sedation procedures and follows the NEBDN Dental Sedation Nursing Syllabus, http://nebdn.org/sites/default/files/Dental%20Sedation%20Nursing%20-%20Syllabus.pdf.

The newly structured Certificate/ Award qualification was launched by the NEBDN on 1st January 2016, it allows dental nurses the opportunity to gain a qualification more suited to their clinical environment.

You will be expected to attend the Centre on the following dates:

  • Friday 10 November 2017
  • Saturday 2 December 2017
  • Friday 12 January 2018
  • Saturday 3 February 2018
  • Friday 2 March 2018
  • Friday 20 April 2018
  • Friday 18 May 2018
  • Friday 8 June 2018

Suitable for

GDC Registered Dental Nurses who assist with patients receiving treatment under conscious sedation (Intravenous Sedation and/or Inhalation Sedation)

Course objectives

This course will cover:

  • Applied Anatomy and Physiology
  • Applied Pharmacology
  • Equipment used in Dental Sedation
  • Legislation
  • Assisting, monitoring and recovery of conscious sedation patients
  • Dealing with medical emergencies.
Outcomes

By the end of this course Dental Nurses will be able to:

  • Prepare, monitor and recover a patient during a sedation procedure
  • Preparation and clearing of a clinical environment
  • Assist the dentist in procedures including recovering a patient
  • Apply current legislation including consent in their working practice
  • Demonstrate competency in assisting with the treatment of patients undergoing conscious sedation through the completion of a Record of Competence.
Entry requirements

Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing

  • GDC Registration Number
  • Access to a minimum of 20 Intravenous sedation cases and a minimum of 10 Inhalation sedation cases.
  • Self-motivation
  • Supportive Employer who will supervise you in your workplace and assess competence as well as provide constructive teaching and feedback on clinical tasks

Award in Inhalation Sedation Dental Nursing

  • GDC Registration Number
  • Access to a minimum of a minimum of 10 Inhalation sedation cases.
  • Self-motivation
  • Supportive Employer who will supervise you in your workplace and assess competence as well as provide constructive teaching and feedback on clinical tasks

Award in Intravenous Sedation Dental Nursing

  • GDC Registration Number
  • Access to a minimum of 20 Intravenous sedation cases.
  • Self-motivation
  • Supportive Employer who will supervise you in your workplace and assess competence as well as provide constructive teaching and feedback on clinical tasks
Assessment

To achieve the qualification you will need:

  • 80% attendance on the course dates
  • Successful completion of NEBDN Record of Competence
  • Achieve pass mark in the NEBDN written examination.
